The stoat's direct ancestor was Mustela palerminea, a common carnivore in central and eastern Europe during the Middle Pleistocene, that spread to North America during the late Blancan or early Irvingtonian. The stoat is the product of a process begun 5–7 million years ago, when northern forests were replaced by open grassland, thus prompting an explosive evolution of small, burrowing rodents.   Both male and female stoats mate freely with multiple partners, and kits (young) in the same litter can have different fathers. The female has one litter of 3 to 18 kits per year. The development of the fertilized eggs begins after a delay of 8 to 9 months, and is triggered by an increase in daylight.

Field naturalists have observed the activities of weasels for centuries. Their descriptions were often accurate but sometimes misinterpreted the animals' behaviors and underlying explanations for those behaviors. In , for example, The Cabinet; Or the Natural History of Quadrupeds, Birds, Fishes and Insects (published anonymously) maintained that a stoat “kills both the rein-deer and the bear”.

The smallest long-tailed weasels are about the same size as the largest stoats. Long-tailed weasels are much larger than least weasels (Mustela nivalis), which are the smallest Carnivorans. Least weasels, like the stoat, are found in both Eurasia and North America, and they can even be . (1) The Natural History of Weasels and Stoats: Ecology, Behavior, and Management by Carolyn M. King and Roger A. Powell, illustrated by Consie Powell [ISBN: ] A very well written book that goes to great lengths to explain the truths about stoats and other weasels across the world; as well as their impact in different environments.
